The Manawatu Racing Club, like the Pending and other clubs, appears to have fallen in over the installation of the electric totalizator. Apart from the heavy initial cost — £8491 in the case of the M.R.C.—the upkeep of the “automatic machine" is proving very heavy. For days before a meeting an expensive staff of experts is .required to overhaul and test every part of the mechanism, and these and other charges have brought the cost of the new totalisator considerably above what the clubs anticipated. Up to date, the M.R.C. has paid Automatic Totalisations Ltd., the sum of £9774, not counting the £2OOO paid to the syndicate. One wonders whether it was worth it—perfect though the pew machine is!
