DISTRICT NEWS.

MOKAU—AWAKING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A football match, Tongapurutu v. Awakino, was placed at Awakino on Saturday, July 8. A fast and clean game, played in glorious weather, resulted in a. win for Awakino by 6 to 3. Tongapurutu played a good game, but the Awakiuo forwards were too strong for them. For Awakino K. Black and G. McMillan scored trios. For Tongapurutu B. Crudis kicked a. really splendid goal. Mr. Geo. Bignell refereed. Keith Black was injured in the game, but on enquiry, I was pleased to hear that he is progressing favorably. In the evening, a grand ball under the .•iuspic.es of the Awakino Football Club, was held in the Awakino Hall, and proved one of he most successful and enjoyable functions held in the district. There must have been nearly a hundred couples present. The music was supplied by an orchestra of six, viz.; Mrs. McNeice and Mr. A. G. Sampson, violin; Mr. F. Northern, piano; Mr. J. Northern, flute; Mr. A. Sole, cornet; and Mr. McGregor (conductor), cymbals, kettledrum, and triangle. One cannot speak too highly of the music supplied by these talented amateurs-. The floor was in excellent order. The supper, which was catered for by Mrs. Al. Carter, was very dainty. Extras for the unusic were contributed by Mesdanies A. Sole and Christofferson. After supper, the shield, generously donated by Mr. Geo. McMillan, of Awakino, was presented to the captain of the Tongapurutu team (Mr. Bruce) on behalf of that team, who are the holders for the present season, Awakino having held it last year. Mr. Bruce, in a happy little speech, thanked the donor of the shield, and also the Awakino Club for their generous treatment of the “Tongapurutuiles.” “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows," was then sung, and three hearty cheers given for the Tongapurutu team. The silver cup donated by Mr. J. McNeice for the best all round player in the Awakino team was won by Mr. Arnold Foster, a very popular win. A gold medal, donated by Mr. Adams, for the most improved “back,” was won by A. J. Haldane. A gold medal, donated by Mr. Geo. Bignell for the best placekicker was won by B. Crudis, of Tongapurutu team. A gold medal, donated by Mr. Petrie, of Stratford, for the most improved forward, was won by Fred. Wolfe, junr. Mr. Wolfe’s medal for the player scoring most, points will not be ptesented till the end of- the season. Mr. L. Jones, president of the club made the presentations, handing them to Mrs. Jones, who in turn presented them to the players. The ladies present were:—Mrs. L. Jones, white silk net; Mrs. W. D.
