WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

THE MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Waitomo County Council was held at Te Kuiti on July 7. Present: Councillors R. Were (chairman), R. Boddy, L. F. Leech, H. H. Thoms, W. A. Lee, C. K. Wilson, P. D. Smyth, J. C. Bowick, H. A. Julian. The district engineer of the Public Works Department wrote in regard to the PirongiaKawhia Road, stating that in view of the delay in arranging the matter of maintenance of the road and the early advent of the wet season, it had been considered advisable, after conference with the Kawhia county engineer, to postpone the work for the .present. In regard to the Hangatiki-Waitomo Road, the Minister of Public Works wrote informing the council that the maintenance cf the road devolved entirely upon the council, and that the Minister regretted that he could see no reason why the Government should cbfitrihute to a work of this nature. A more recent letter, however, from the Minister, stated that the matter had been reviewed as a result of the representations made by the council, and that in view of the difficulty experienced by the council in financing the maintenance of the road, and the fact that a certain amount of the damage done was as the result of the tourist traffic to the Waitomo Caves, the Minister had agreed to contribute at the rate o? £lOO (pound for pound) per annum towards the maintenance of that section of the road beyond the limeworks and sawmills in the direction of the caves. The resident engineer of the Public Works Department at Taumarunui wrote asking the council to draw up some comprehensive proposals as to the manner in which the council intends to expend the £2OO thus made available irt respect of the same road.—The enginer was instructed to draw up a report as to the best means of expending the £2OO in question. The clerk submitted schedules and estimatt s of work required to maintain the roads, etc., during the year ending March 31, 1923. In framing the estimates, he said he had, nut taken “thirds’’ into account, as he was of opinion that these should be spent on permanent work and that maintenance should be done out of rates.
