DEATHS IN EXPLOSION.
CRIMINAL CHARGES FOLLOW. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Received July 12, 5.5 p.m. London, July 11. The trial has concluded in which Knowles, the husband of the owner of the factory at Tipton where IS girls were killed in an explosion, and Chadwick, the manager, were charged with manslaughter. Knowles was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and Chadwick was discharged.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. An explosion occurred at Port Tipton, Staffordshire, killing five outright and injuring 30 girls who were removing the contents of 160 tons of cartridges. The explosion occurred while the contents were being put into a separate receptacle, and blew off the roof. The whole of the 50 girls in the room were blackened beyond recognition. All the clothing of many of them was torn off the bodies and the hair burned off the others. Many died from the injuries, the total deaths being 18.
