Mr. Tom Pollard, of Christchurch, has been operated upon, and is doing as well as possible.

Colonel ' Young, director of the Live Stock Division of the Department pf Agriculture, is spending a few days fri this district.

The death is reported in Auckland of Miss E. Casey, M.A., formerly mistress o-f the Taumarunui District High School. Miss Casey left Taumarunui last December, and her death follows a long and painful illness. At a representative meeting of delegates from all parts of the Wairarapa, held at Carterton on Monday night, Mr. J. W. Card, Mayor of Featherston, was unanimously selected as Liberal-Labor candidate for the Wairarapa seat at the coming general election. Mr. H. F. Penington, headmaster of the Fendalton School, has been selected as headmaster of the Wharenui School. Mr. Penington was for eight years headmaster at Lepperton (Taranaki), for a similar period in charge of the Leeston School, and for six years senior assistant at the Richmond School. He has been in charge at Fendalton for about a vear.

Before commencing the business at the Hawera Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Mr., Ryan, president o-f the Hawera Law Society, said it was with the deepest regret and sorrow that they heard of the death of Mr. Bailey, lately Stipendiary Magistrate for the district. The late Mr. Bailey was a man of the highest honor and integrity. He was courteous and obliging to all, and the members of the Bar were very proud of him. His death came as a great shock to them, and he wished to take the opportunity on behalf of the members of the Bar. of extending to Mrs. Bailey and family their very great sympathy. Mr. Mowlem said he concurred in all that had been said by Mr. Ryan, and wished to express his regret at the late Mr. Bailey’s early decease and his sympathy with the relatives who had been left behind.
