OBITUARY.

dr. hugh McCleland.

Private advice was received in New Plymouth yesterday of the death of Dr. Hugh A. McCleland, M.R.C.S. (Eng.) and L.R.C.P. (London), a well-known medical practitioner in New Plymouth, who left for Australia with his wife and daughter for a holiday trip about four weeks ago Dr. McCleland was born in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland, about 65 years ago, and obtained his diplomas in London, where he attended St. Mary’s Hospital and afterwards practised as locum tenens for several years in different parts of England. In 1896 he arrived in New Zealand, landing in Wellington, whence he removed to New Plymouth almost immediately. He has thus practised his profession here for 26 years. Dr. McCleland built up a considerable practise, besides being lodge doctor for the Oddfellows, Hibernians. Rechabites and Druids. For a number of years he also acted as port health officer, but resigned the position owing to his practise engaging all his attention. The late doctor was a genial man and well-liked; there will be a large number of friends who will learn with regret of his unexpected death whilst away on holiday. Dr. McCleland is survived by a widow and t\v daughters (Misses Kit and Sheila McCleland), whilst another daughter predeceased him.
