NOTES ON THE RACING. (Our Special Correspondent.) Wellington, July 8. The Wellington winter meeting was begun to-day in fine weather and before a big crowd. The track was very soft. Racing opened with the Victoria Hurdles, for which Passenger was made favorite, and Royal Exchange was next in demand. The race was a rather simple one. Royal Exchange took the lead at the start and was never headed. In the ear'y stages he was closely attended by Rowan, Sir Wai and Ruatara. and these horses composed the leading division all the way. Sunray moved up to Royal Exchange six furlongs from the post, but a bad jump two fences from home ruined his chance, and Royal Exchange went on to win easily by three lengths from Rowan, with Sir Wai third and Sunray fourth. Lamour and Para were the public fancies for the Trial Plate. The field was well spread out at the start, and when heads were turned for home. Lady Ridicule was in command. The Absurd mare held the lead to the distance, where Lamour ran to the front and went on to win easily by three lengths. Lady Ridicule ited long enough to get second, finishing 2ck in front of Royal Dispatch. Boughleen Dhoun was another head away fourth, Rrefrigeration was fifth, and Maboughal was Sl Lo,d Nasar and Oak Rose were withdrawn from the First Hack and Hunters’ Steeclechase. leaving a field of 13 to go to the post. Of these, the best supported were Grand Canyon, Seadown and Romance. Grand Canvon and Tatton Park went to the front at the start and led the first time past the stand. Lyroe stopped at the fence at the seven ftnlongs and dropped his rider, and Hylans stopped at the same fence. Ngakanui and Hyginas fell at the bottom of the straight, and Grand Canyon and Tatton Park were still m command as the field passed the stand again. Grand Canyon had a life just before entering the straight, but Warner made a great jeco\erv Seadown ran up to the leaders a mile from home, and with Grand Canyon piloted the field Staff Officer and Brown Linnet were prominent among the others. Seadown and Grand Canyon had the finish to themsehes, and the former, having too much pace for his rival, won by four lengths. Brown Linnet was third, and then came John Bunny, lat ton Fork, and Romance. These six horses were the only horses to finish ° the; oth ers Lyroe and Hylans stopped; Sir Agnes ran off; and the remainder fell. The big field lor the Stewards Handicap was sent away to a good despatch, and for, some distance kept well together Hose of Athens was prominent when they " a, > S° ne “ couple of furlongs, but. appoa.hlng tl straight civilform. Listening Tost and PasXnless were well up. Civilform ran very wide on the bend and came n ß l>t over to the fence near the stand. Lls “" l " e h charge below the distance, kept hard at it, stalled off a challenge by Passionless, am won by half a length. Civilform was third and Machree fourth. The whole of the 1G acceptors were saddled nr. for the Wellington steeplechase. Nothing looked bettor than Coalition, and ho was instiled a good favorite. Next in demand were Waikaretu, Sea De’ll, Kohu, and Red Cent. Xaata drew the rails. Coalition was in the middle of the line, and Colma on the extreme outer. When the field was released Nga>a moved out well and was first to approach the Initial obstacle, followed by Red Cent and Sea De’il. Ngata came to grief at the second fence, and at the post and rails Coalttion. First Line, Old Gold and Master Boris went. Waikaretu took charge, and, passing the stand held the lead from Glenisla anti Red Cent. At the mile post these three were well clear and going well. Among the next bunch were Kohu and Master Strowan. Gomin« round to the post and rails again, Watkaretu anti Glenisla were ten lengths out In treat. GleauU made a bad luffip. and Wai*.

karetu went on in the lead. Sea De’il fell at the pist and rails. ’As the field took the double in front of the stand, Waikaretu was still in charge, and Master Strowan had run up into second position.. The next. t were Glenisla, Kohu, and Oakleigh. A mile from home Master Strowan hit the front. Waikaretu lying next and Kohu third. After crossing the brush fence, five furlongs from home, Oakleigh took charge and Waikaretu dropped back. With half a mile to do, Oakleigh, 'Master Strowan and Kohu appeared to have the finish to themselves, -but Kohu fell at the post and rails. The other pair went on together, and Master Strowan had a very slight advantage at the last fence, and from there home he held Oakleigh safe and won in a good fisish by half a length. Waikaretu was 20 lengths away, third, and the next to finhl. were Calma. Glenisla, Red Cent, Khartoum, Lawsuit, and Likelihood.

Another big field contested the Charity Cup, and those most in favor Were Royal Box, Arch Salute, Strategy, Daintj’ Step, and Demos. The start was a good one. Gold Kip was the first to show out, closely followed by Some Kid and Haurangi. After the field had gone a couple of furlongs. Arch Salute moved up behind the leaders, and Some Kid disappeared into the ruck. Royal Box was in the middle of the field, and Strategy Improved his position crossing the top, while Demos moved Up a little. Strategy, Haurangi and Gold Kip were in front as the field swung into the straight, but Strategy was fading just below the distance. Demos came fast on the outer side, and looked to have a good chance: but a little later McFlinn got Arch Salute upon the rails and immediately placed the issue beyond doubt. Arch Salute won by three lengths, Gold Kip beat Demos by a neck, and Some Fashion .finished well in the fourth place. Sunny Corner was the last. General Petaine, Volo, Alteration and Penury Rose were the machine favorites for the Trentham Hurdles. Penury- Rose was early in the lead and led over the first hurdle, which was flattened out. At the stand, Falstaff, Penury Rose, Spook, General Petain and Fisher was the order of the leaders. There was little change on the way round. General Petain, Penurj’ Rose, Volo and Spook were the leaders at the bottom of the. straight. Penury Rose did not take the last ffcnee too well, and General Petain went right away and won by five lengths. Penury Rose was second, and the nex£ to finish were Falstaff, Volo, and Kareao. A fog was drifting across the course as the last race was being rjin, and the horses were difficult to pick up. Sir Burnet was one of the early leaders, but be ran off the course at. the home bend. Liquer and Big Push were fighting out the finish up the straight, when Wrangle came with a late run and just got up to win by a head, with the other two practically in line. RACING IN AUSTRALIA.
