ELTHAM COUNTY.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Eltham County Council was held on Saturday. Present: Crs. C. J. Belcher, (chairman), E- J. Gifford, C. E. McGuinnees, A. Massana, W.E.Carter, R. J. Knuckey, W. Barker and A. Campbell. An apology for absence was read from Cr. A- MeWilliam. The engineer, Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald, reported for the month as follows: — South metalling was done on the Neill and Mountain Roads. A small amount of work was done on Boyion. Dalziel and Rotokare Roads. Mangatoki Riding. —Tar patching was continued on the Upper Hasting Road, and side tracks metalled on the Eltham and Hunter RoadsOmona Riding.—Further flood damage clearing was done on Rawhitiroa and Mataiwhetu roads, and some maintenance work on Rawhitiroa Road. Men employed under contracts by the Public Works Department ate reopening the Lower Maitaiwhetu and Whfenuakura Valley roads and the road beyond Maeroa will be dealt with in the same way. The Hawera settlers who are working out their rates at the far end of Whenuakura Valley are making a good showing.

Kaponga Riding.— Metal patching and water tabling was done. Eltham Riding.—About eleven chains of Rawhitiroa Road this side and up the ridge were refaced and some patching done on this and the Hu Road- Some side-tracking was done on the Rawhitiroa Road this side of Rawhitiroa factory. The filling on the Mangawhere road near Maata factory was repaired. The box-thorn nuisance is prevalent, doubtless "owing to the large number of hedge being cut, and whilst many owners are taking reasonable precautions against causing trouble to road users, others are not so careful. The Waimea County Council asked support to a resolution in favor of the tyre tax being equitably allocated .between all counties and road boards.— ReceivedThe Thames Borough Council wrote soliciting co-operation in urging the Government to raise an adequate loan to meet the of local bodies in the matter of their antecedent liability.—lt was decided to support the Thames Borough’s attitude. , The Taieri County Council forwarded a resolution asking for support in urging the Government to make the cost of hospitals a charge on the Consoli? dated Fund. —Received. The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of the report of the Boundaries Commission on the proposed alteration of boundaries between the Eltham and Stratford counties. The chairman said the decision was not good for the Eltham County, .but they would have to abide by the decision given. The New Plymouth branch of the Public Service Association circularised the Council asking for its opinion of the second salary ‘’cut.”—The letter j was received, it being considered the matter was between the Government and the Service.
