FATAL ASSAULT.
DEATH OF BANK. MANAGER. ATTACKED ON A TRAIN. BANK BURGLARY FOLLOWS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received July 9, 5.5 p.mSydney, July 9. Frank Cecil Kemmis, manager of the Hornsby branch of the Savings Bank, was assaulted in a train between Hornsby and Wahroonga on his way home from the .bank and robbed of his keys. He was discovered in a semiconscious state by another passenger, and he was only able to state that he had been assaulted and his keys taken.. He was removed to hospital, where he died the following day. After the assault an attempt was made to rob the bank, where there was £5OOO in the safe, but it was unsuccessful, as two keys were required to open it. The rule of the bank is ♦hat one key is carried by the manager and the other by another officer. The bank was open for depositors on Friday night. Apparently the criminals watched the officials close the premises about ten o’clock and they followed Kemmis to the train-
The plans for the robbery evidently had been maturing for some time, as a few days ago Kemmis’ house at Wahroonga was burgled and a bunch of keys stolen, but owing to the number of suburban robberies the significance was not apparent. The police discovered a heavy blacksmith’s hammer near the railway station at Wahroonga. which was apparently used on Kemmis.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
