August 8, 10, and 12—Canterbury J.C. Grand National. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Wellington Steeples to-day. The Hawke is in work again. L’Amour should win a race at Trentham. The V.R.C. Grand National Steeples will be run to-day. Coalition and Sea De’il may fight out the finish of the Wellington Steeples. While being hunted with the Rangitikei Hunt on Wednesday, Bill fell and broke his neck. Ruatara, Passenger and Hushman promise to run well in minor hurdle races at Trentham. Happy King, the well named son of Comedy King and Gladsome, won the steeples at Epsom (Australia) on June 21'. Kilwa (Kdlbroney—Divinia) and Alation (Alawa —Mary) have been winning in the pony class in ’Stralia recently. Christchurch scribes report that Whipping Boy is slightly amiss, and may not be a runner at Wellington. If L’Amour does not sport silk in the Trial Plate to-day, complimentary and Lady Ridicule may get in the money. Fiscom, twice winner of the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdles, is a halfbrother (by Comedy King) to our own Maniapoto. Royal Box and Stratergy will carry big money in the Charity Cup to-day. Mort Avis appears to have more than a rough chance with 9J2. Percy Mason has taken up Pluto, Vespucci and Veil again. All look well with the exception of Veil, who is. a delicate, sort.
H. McSweeney, who won the Winter Hurdle Race on Alteration last year, will again pilot the local jumper in Trentham engagements. Taranaki does not claim a single entry in the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase. Volo, Alteration, and Kareao figure in the Hurdles. ( Wrangle looks like starting favorite in the Te Aro Handicap to-day, but Economist and L’Amour should not want for backers.
Advices from Sydney state that A. McCormack and J. Barry, who intend combining business with pleasure across the water, have been granted licenses by the A.J.C. Ngata appears to have gone out of favor for the Wellington Steeplechase. Although a perfect fencer; over the small sticks, the Maniapoto gelding evinces a strong dislike to brush fences, and his exhibitions at Trentham have been most discouraging. Seadown should start favorite in the Hack Steeples at Trentham to-day. He gave a fine exhibition of jumping when he won at Hastings, and the field he has to meet to-day is not a very strong one, though Grand Canyon and Ngakanui may run well. •Waikaretu. who wort a treble at the Great Northern meeting, gained many admirers for the Wellington Steeples |by the slashing exhibition he gave on ' Thursday morning over two rounds of ; the big fences at Trentham. Although a good sort, he has yet to prove himself in the same class as Coalition, Sea De’il and others that he win meet this afternoon, although he should win a’ race at the meeting.
A generally well informed Awapuni tout informs the writer that Passionless has been doing excellent work, and is likely to catch'a race at Wellington. Passenger, who will be ridden by A. McDonald, and Rowan, who will have the services of W. Young, will only have to reproduce their track form to get amongst the winners. Also that Bonibrook, who is now trained at Marton, is going very well. Further riding engagements announced for Wellington:—Master Strowan (W. Young), Likelihood (T. L. Reid), Demos (B. H. Morris), Mdrt Avis (H. Goldfinch). Bitholia (J. O’Shea). Oak Rose (S. Henderson), Romance (T. L. Reid), Lord Nagar.and Gladful (A. Wormaid), Tatton Park (A. McDonald), Oakleigh (J. Roach), and Pqgonui (J. O’Shea).
