AGRICULTURAL MATTERS.
THE TARANAKI SOCIETY. GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING. The general committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society met at New Plymouth yesterday. Present: Messrs. W. L. Grant (chairman), A. E. Washer, H. N. Sampson, W. Hall, G. W. Browne, F. W. Cornwall, N. W. Hill, J. Allen, E. Cole, C. Dobson, A. T. Moore, A. Turn bull, C. W. Reube, H. Stonex, A. R. Davis. G. H. Bell. Mr. A. J. Richards forwarded a donation of £2 Is for member’s fee and a donation for the boys’ and girls’ handwriting competition. He was accorded a vote of thanks for this donation. The Plunket Society wrote conveying their grateful thanks for the Agricultural Society’s help and courtesy at the last winter show. The Plunket Society applied for space at the 1923 winter show. Votes of thanks were accorded the following in connection with work done at the recent show: The ladies’ committee, Red Post, Messrs. Sam and Walter Topless, Mr. J. J. Collins, Messrs Taylor and Robinosn (for assistance to stage and re-pack the butter and cheese exhibits) : all those who gave voluntary assistance; all those who donated their exhibits to the society; Messrs. Kirk and Cameron (who acted as auctioneers) ; Messrs. E. W. Marsh and Beal, for cartage of birds; Miss Pratt (donation of prize-money), and Mr. Rowe (donation of model house). The preliminary order-paper for the annual conference of the New Zealand Board of Agriculture, to be held at Wellington, commencing on July 19, was forwarded. The remits dealt with the abolition of the amusement tax, rates on association’s property, finance, agricultural education, high school - boards’ elections, constitution ot the agricultural board, excursion fares for men in charge of show-stock, and for improved facilities for the conveyance of stock on the railways, judges’ list, payment of judges, I dace of the annual conference and date of provincial conferences, annual subscription. meat poo], frozen meat test, earmarks and brands, cattle tick, cow- j testing, stock-breeding, inferior stock, I unfair shearing of sheep, uniform measurement of horses, uniform counting of points, cloak-room liabilities, show privilege tickets, sideshows, stock returns, land agents’ licenses, noxious weeds, arbitration laws, dehorning cattle, injustice in the levying of the income tax. The society’s delegate was advised to support the remits dealing with the abolition of the amusement tax and ask for a refund on the tax already paid on “gates,” a remit urging more attention to the agricultural side of education, judges’ list, the calling and reallotment of earmarks and brands, cattletick precautions, stock-breeding, remission of tax on agricultural motors and oil-engines, noxious, weeds. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. W. Hall for representing the society at the recent conference of North Island societies at Palmerston North and for his explanation of the proceedings there. A sum of £2 2s was voted towards the clerical work in connection with the boys’ and girls’ club, as recommended by the finance committee. Messrs. P. W. Roberts. R. H. .Saunders, R. Svme. P. Bell (Rahotu) were elected members of the society.
