LONDON HOTEL SCENE.
MELBOURNE MAN ROBBED. THIEF IN CROWDED LIFT. London, June 4. Mr. H. A. Underwood, of Melbourne, figured in an exciting incident in a London hotel. After drawing £l2O from a bank he was going to his room in a crowded lift. Being subjected to pressure in a corner, he became suspicious, 'and discovered that his notes had disappeared. He ordered the liftman to detain the passengers, declaring that he had been Tubbed. Another occupant of the lift who was standing near Mr. Underwood declared that he also had been robbed, and said to Mr. Underwood: “Here’s a bundle of notes on the floor. Perhaps they are yours?” Mr. Underwood identified the notes, but was dissatisfied with the explanation, and summoned the manager, who ordered the passengers to display the keys of their rooms. AH possessed keys except the man who had declared that he had been robbed. He was detained in a room under guard of the porter. The police were summoned, and la+er a. scuffle was heard in the room, the door of which was locked on the inside. The door was burst in, and the porter was found to be injured, whereupon the manager and his assistants seized and- detained the map, and handed him over to the police, who arrested him on a charge said to have no connection with the lift incident.
