THE RUGBY GAME. f.-NORSH TARANAKI v. SOUTH '% SOUTHERNERS’ NARROW VICTORY. The weather was not favorable for the match between North and South Taranaki at Stratford yesterday, but there was an attendance of about 800, and the spectators were well repaid. The match proved to be one of the best divisional fixtures seen for years, being strenuously contested to the end. It was fast, both teams making play open, and there was very little between the fifteens, the issue being in the balance to the end. The southerners were superior in the loose, and this was mainly responsible for their narrow Victors’ by two points, the game ending: South 14, North 12. In the southern team West and. Fogarty were upable to play, their places being filled by Crompton and Scott, whilst in the northern team Hart was replaced by Stohr and Burkhardt by Baird. Roberts captained tbe southerners and Fryday the northerners. From the kick off the southerners attacked, but Sykes cleared, and play went to midfield. The southern backs got going, Robertson centring, but Coutts cleared, and the northern rearguard took a turn. Stehr’s kick was followed up by Fryday, and the ball went to touch in goal. Play followed up and down field, both backs and forwards taking a hand, until Fryday made a great opening to Vaughan, who outpaced the opposition and scored. Coutts failed to goal. North 3 South 0 A clever piece of play by Ennis, who kicked over the full back’s head, nearly ended in a score. Then Crompton headed the southern pack in a strong rush that reached Sykes before it was checked. Again Coutts and Oliver checked the southern pack, and then Greaves shot the ball to Robertson, who was well taken by Sykes. A dangerous move bj' McCullough and Campbell was checked by Johnson, but the northerners kept up the pressure. Stohr essayed to pot, and Ennis also made a good run, but finally the southerners cleared, and heady play by Bell set them to the attack. Hunt scored and Roberts goaled. South o North 3 The northerners then got busy, Coutts and Ennis handling nicely. Then McCullough picked up and galloped down field, with Fryday in attendance. When opposed by Roberts he failed to pass, and a great chance went. The northerners were having the best of it when half-time sounded with the score South 5 North 3 On resuming Fryday, who had been playing a great game as rover, had to retire, H. Oliver going rover and Bailey going into the pack. This was a serious loss to north. The southerners at once attacked, but McCullough and Stohr centred, and the latter smothered Bell. A passing movement broke down, and the southern pack assumed the upper hand until Oliver set his men going. Vaughan handed on to Stohr, and that speedy back, when blocked, side-stepped two men beautifully and scored a great try, which Coutts failed to convert. North 0 South 5 The southern forwards, headed by Hammersley, Scott and Malone, came with a great burst, but Oliver checked. Atkins set his backs going, and Wilkinson made a great dash, but was pushed out at the corner—a close shave. After another brisk struggle Roberts tried to force his way through, but without success, and gradually the northerners cleared, a penalty assisting. Scott was prominent for the southerners, but McCullough headed a counter rush. Then Malone followed fast after a fine kick, but Stohr was able to speculate to touch. Passing bouts ensued. Robertson and Wilkinson were ■tackled by Vaughan and Stohr, and then Roberts spoilt a chance by holding on. The southerners, however, wer£ not to be denied, and from a bout amongst the backs Roberts handed on to Wilkinson; the latter beat Stohr. literally hurdled Sykes, and scored in the corner. Roberts just failed to goal. South 8 North 6 The southerners were soon back again, and from a pass Malone got over. Roberts failed to goal. South 11 North B The southern pack were now dominating the situation and gave the northern backs some anxious moments. Sykes cleared well, and then the northern backs carried play to southern territory, where Roberts was caught with the leather in front of his goal, but Johnson cleared. Then Vaughan broke away nicely, with Stohr in attendance, and a try looked certain, but he cut In instead of passing. A moment later Coutts had a resultless shot from a penalty, the ball being forced. Sykes took the kick off and ran, but his kick to touch failed, and Johnson securing ran in from half-way. The kick at goal failed. South 14 North <1 This reverse stirred up the north team, and they started a passing bout. Ennis sent the ball to H. Oliver, who made a fine opening, and Baird being handy, scored. H. Oliver failed to goal. South 14 North 9 South started passing, the ball travelling via all the backs to Wilkinson, who was collared. Then H. Oliver and Campbell broke through to the southern twenty-five, where Coutts picked; up and dashed over. H. Oliver failed to goal. South 14 North 12 North tried hard to add another score, but the southerners' defence was good, and after a long kick Stohr forced. Malone marked the kick off and his kick was again forced. Time then sounded. air. A. F. Neilson refereed. i REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS THE A. AND B. FIFTEENS. NEXT WEEK’S MATCHES. After the match the selectors (Messrs. D. J. Malone, A. L. Humphries, and W. A.
