DUTY ON BEER.

POSITION IN BRITAIN By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 28, 7.50 p.m. London, June 27. In the House of Commons, Sir Robert Horne accepted an amendment to the Finance Bill halving the duty on intoxicants supplied to clubs. Subsequently an amendment was moved reducing the duty on beer from 100 s to 70s per barrel. Sir Robert Horne said this would involve an addition of a shilling to the income tax. A prolonged debate followed, speakers urging that the duty should be reduced, in view of the recent enormous deductions from wages. The amendment was rejected.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assn.
