The match between the Australians and the Taranaki representatives takes place at the Pnkekura Park sports ground at New Plymouth this afternoon, commencing at 2.15. Yesterday, the Australians were met by local Football Association representatives, who, with members of the Victoria League, entertained them to morning tea at the League I rooms. Mr. L. C. H. Dawson welcomed the | The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) then ex- [ tended a welcome to the overseas visitors on | behalf of the people of New Plymouth, and . said he thought he might venture without fear I to extend the welcome on behalf of the whole { of Taranaki. He said this district desired | to associate itself with the other districts of I the Dominion In cordially greeting their ■ friends from Australia. Such visits as these did a great deal to cement the friendship between different parts of the Empire. He hoped they would have the satisfaction of knowing later on that their visit here bad given the game an impetus. Mr. G. E. Jago, on behalf of the Taranaki Rugby Union, also joined in the welcome to the visitors, assuring them that the union was out to assist all amateur sport, and was in no way opposed to the game of “soccer.” “If you can play ‘soccer’ as well as your Aussies can fight, then—Gold help Taranaki 1” he smilingly remarked. Mr. Jas. McLeod, chairman of the Taranaki Rugby Union, also welcomed the visitors. Mr. A. Morgan, manager of the team, replying on behalf of the visitors, said the warmth of the welcome accorded them seemed to deepen the further they went. Monday night’s demonstration was a great surprise to them, and he thought it all went to show the great respect in which the Commonwealth was held In New Zealand. He was particularly pleased at the good feeling existing between followers of Rugby and the Football Association. He expressed the opinion that fully 50 per cent, of the spectators at the matches they had played in the Dominion were Rugby followers. He thought that spirit was bound to be of mutual advantage. He expressed surprise that there were “soccer’’ players who were prepared to travel such distances as they had to in some parts of New Zealand to get their game, and hoped the visit of the Australians would assist to create an interest in the game which would result in that difficulty being overcome. The visitors were entertained during the day with motor drives around the district. THE RUGBY GAME. MAORIS IN AUSTRALIA. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.
