CRIME IN GERMANY. • CABINET MINISTER SHOT. MURDERERS GET A.WAY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received June 24, 5.5 pan. ( Berlin, June 24. Dr. Rathenau, Minister for Foreign Affairs, has been assassinated. Dr. Rathenau was assassinated near his home at Grunewald, a suburb of Berlin. He was proceeding to a Cabinet meeting in a car, which was followed by another car. When reducing speed near a corner, two men in the second car fired ten shots with revolvers and threw a grenade. Dr. Rathenau fell dead immediately. The assassins sped away, and were not recognised. The news caused a sensation in Berlin. Several Cabinet Ministers burst into tears, and the Cabinet meeting was abandoned. Dr. Rathenau has been prominently before the public of late in connection with the discussions on the reparations problems, he having recently visited London and Paris to present Germany’s case. He was one of Germany’s principal delegates at the Genoa Conference, where he directed Germany’s foreign policy. He was concerned in promoting the agreement between Russia and Germany, which provided one of the most disturbing “incidents” at Genoa.
