The death -of Miss C. H. Retford, of New Plymouth, which occurred from heart failure early on Saturday morning, will come as something akin to a, personal loss to a large circle of friends, both old and young. Miss Retford came to New Zealand from England in the ship. Waikato as a young woman, landing at Wellington, and later coming to New Plymouth in the ship Luna on July 15, 1874. She lias thus been a resident of the town for almost fifty years. She was accompanied by an elder sister and younger brother, both of whom predeceased her. The deceased lady, with her sister, conducted a fancy goods business in the early days, later being employed by the late Mr. G. M. Brasch in his fancy goods and tobacconist’s shop in Devon Street. -On the death of Mr. Brasch, Miss Retford established herself in business, first in Devon Street just above the Bank of N.S.W., and later in Currie Street, where she has remained ever since. She was in her usual health till two days before her death; she passed away in her sleep early on Saturday morning. Miss Retford was of a generous, kind-hearted disposition and thei’o are many who will miss her.
