AUSTRALIAN RACING. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Melbourne, June 23. First acceptances for the National Hurdles include Lochella and Chrysostom, and for he Steeplechase, Lochella. TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB. ALTERATION OF RULE. A special general meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club was held last night. In the aosence through illness of Mr. L. A. Nolan (chairman of the committee), Mr. Newton King presided over an attendance of 22 members. The business of the meeting was to consider a notice of motion by Mr. A. W. Webster to delete rule 27, referring to the election of stewards, and which reads as follows: "The stewards of the club shall consist of 12 members (exclu ve of ex-officio stewards), and they shall hold office until the ensuing annual meeting, when ail elected stewards will retire. A retiring steward shall be eligible for re-election. At each annual meeting six stewards shall be elected by the members and six shall be elected by the committee at its first or other convenient meeting after the annual meeting.” The rule proposed to substitute in lieu of this reads:—“The stewards of the club shall consist of 14 members (exclusive of ex officio stewards) ; and they shall hold office until the nsuing annual meeting. At such annua' leeting seven stewards (not being ex officio tewords) shall retire from office. The names >f the stewards so to retire shall be determined by the committee by lot. The said annual meeting’ shall elect seven stewards >n the place of those retiring. At every subse quent annual meeting the seven stewards wh have been longest in office shall retire, and the meeting shall elect seven stewards in their place. If any dispute shall arise as to the length of the term of office of any steward, such dispute shall be determined by the coin mtttee, whose decision shall be final. A retiring steward shall be eligible for re-election.” In proposing the motion, Mr. Webster said his idea was to place the stewards on the same level as members of the committee. It . seemed to him that members should have the ' right to elect all their own stewards. Though some objected to the continuity of the stewards’ term being broken, he did not think this was detrimental, and - he was moving .•> ■ alter the rule in the interests of members. Mr. J. C. Morey seconded the motion, Mr. J. McLeod speaking in support of it. The motion was carried. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) Hawke’s Bay Hunt meeting to-day. Wellington weights are due on Monday. Whizz Bang cost his party a pile at Hastings. Chant Royal Is now amongst the ponies in Sydney. Mattock ran practically unbacked when he won the June Steeples. The consistent Weidone broke it for a win at last at Hastings. Spook and Rua tar a were in the market on Thursday, and both returned dividends. Coalition can only get 12.7 in the Wellington Steeples, and Is now almost at his best. Omaha and Ngata figure in both the Wellington Steeples and Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham. The latest jocksters to take on the Sydney trip include A. McCormack, J. Barry, and C. Emerson. Kareao is always “knocking at the door,’’ and a win for him should not be far distant. It is reported that George Price will take charge of the team of horses formerly under the care of H. Telford. Old Multifual is not done with yet, as he proved by winnings a couple of “Bracelets” at the Hawke’s Bay carnival. Master Strowan is again in work at Otaki, but reports state that there is not much chance of the old champion standing a searching preparation. Nominations for this year’s Melbourne Cup total 299—a record for the race. The Caulfield Cup has attracted 276, which is also a record. Handicappers earn their money in those parts. The New Zealand-bred Beltane, now owned in Tasmania, has been sent across to Melbourne to contest the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdle Race. Beltane ran second in the Australian Hurdle Race in 1919, but is now well up in years, being bred in 1913. A Manawatu scribe reports that, despite rumors to the contrary, the Dannevirke Hunt Club is going on with its race meeting at the usual time, and the date chosen is in the last week in August. Judging by the number of useful horses being hunted at present, the meeting should attract good fields. Bairnsdale is in work again at Foxton, and is being jumped. Wonder if the Bezonian gelding will ever act up to the reputation he had early in the year? Another nctlv.e member on the same track is the useful Otauru Kid. Big stakes will be offered at Randwick during the coming season, the huge sum of £155,928 being spread over 20 days. Of this sum, the A.J.C. is responsible for £132,451. The nominations taken on Friday night by the Canterbury Joskey Club for coming classic events show a filling off as compared with last year’s totals. The nominations for the Welcome Stakes are 6G, as against 87 last year, and the figures for the other races are as follow, those for last year being shown in parentheses: Middle Park Plate 77 (83), Champagne Stakes 79 (95), Challenge Stakes I<B (217), Derby 107 (117), Oaks 50 (74).
