The Ministry intends to introduce a Bill to amend the Stamp Act, reducing the higher stamp duties imposed by the Labor Ministry, which were having a tendency to drive companies from New South Wales to other States. The Ministry also proposes to introduce a new Profiteering Bill, providing very heavy penalties for unfair operations in necessary commodities. Mr. Ley definitely assured a deputation of real estate agents that the Fair Rents Act would be repealed. Cabinet had instructed him to draft a Bill for that purpose. Quoting the result of applications to the Court, Mr. Ley said the reductions varied from 3s to 275. The Act had operated in exactly the opposite direction to which it was intended by Cabinet. The sub-committee to consider educational reform has recommended a loan of £1,300,000 for urgent schools and renovations, also that a fee of two guineas per annum be charged at secondary schools. The Government proposes to introduce a non-party Bill next session for the harbor bridge. Cabinet yesterday despatched a cable ,to Mr. Bradfield instructing him to proceed to interview tenderers in America, also stating that the Government would receive alternative tenders on the basis of tenderers financing the construction on the toll system. It is expected the latter proposal will cause dissention id the Natiaur.mt Party’s ranks.
