SUPPLY OF MILK.

a WELLINGTON SQUABBLE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, June 22. Another of the numerous squabbles over the xnilk supply of the exty has taken the people by surprise. The corporation suddenly announced it would take over the supply itself from to-day for certain districts, and the 1 explanation it gives is that the company responsible for these districts owed the council £9OOO and no reason was forthcoming for the refusal to pay. A long statement Was made this morning by the company, the effect of which seems to be that as payment could not be procured from consumers at once, the company }xad to work on an overdraft for which the directors hfld made themselves personally responsible in the past. As the company would finish operation in a fortnight, when the council introduces the sealed bottle system, the directors did not see their way to take the risk of being left to shoulder bad debts and would / not continue the guarantee. Some of the funds were also locked up bv litigation with the council. They offered to pay cash day by day -for the re» inainder of the term, but this was refused. The company contends |hat the L corporation’s action is a breach of agreement.

Wellington, Last Night. The chairman of the milk commit* tee’s rejoinder to the company’s statement as to reasons for taking over th® milk supply from it in certain portions of the city is that the company was so far back in its payments that to allow it further latitude would have been equivalent to gross neglect. Attempts had been made to obtain payment without success, and when the" milk committee met the directors in eon-ference they refused to allow the manager to give replies to questions as to the financial position. So far from treating the company harshly, it was the strongest desire of the committee that it should carry on its contract uninterruptedly until the whole system was revised on July 9.
