"Perhaps some of them now will acknowledge that Kirkwood is a good golfer." This sums up the admiration Kirkwood has earned. His drive is sometimes uncertain, hut he is deadly with short approaches, and his putitng is excellent. He effected some remarkable performances in the concluding stage, more than once narrowly missing records, particularly at the eighteenth hole, where he barely failed owing to a short approach. Others to qualify are: Miles, 150: Wethered, 152; Herd, Mackenzie, Carter, 153; Todley, Ray, Compston, Michael Scott and Duncan also qualified, the latter by a single stroke. Braid failed to qualify by one stroke.
