Auckland, Last Night. The first of the three matches between the combined Sydney and Brisbane University League tegm and the Auckland representative team was played to-day. The weather was fine, and the ground in good order. It was a fast and exciting game, and was won by the Australians by the narrow margin of 13 to 12. The Australians’ form justified the reputation which had preceded them for fast and open play. In the first spell Australia led by seven points to two. In the first spell, for Australia, Craig kicked - a penalty and ©unworth scored a try, ’which Courtney converted. For Auckland, W. Davidson, kicked a penalty. In the second spell, for' Australia, Cripps and Lensky scored unconverted tries; and for Auckland, Littlewood and Bass scored, Davidson converting the former, while McCljmont succeeded with a free kick. THE ASSOCIATION GAME. CANTERBURY DEFEAT AUSTRALIANS. \ A SPLENDID DISPLAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Canterbury defeated Australia by three goals to one after a splendid, fast display, which was generally conceded to be superior to the South Island game at Christchurch. The match opened sensationally, Mizen, centre forward, scoring for the province in the first three minutes. Half-Time saw Canterbury leading by two goals to one, Norman, inside left, adding Canterbury’s second goal, and Maunder goaling for the Australians. The second half was characterised by speedy play up and down, each side making •many shots. Mizen was again successful. Although defeated, the Australians played splendid football. Their combination was probably superior, but they showed weakness in shooting. They were also pitted against a remarkably clever goalkeeper in Wilson, who saved time and again. NO CHANGE IN TEST TEAM. ‘ ‘ *** Wellington, June 21. In the second Association test the New Zealand team will be the same as at Dunedin. The following players have been selected to play at Hawera on Saturday, June 21: Johnston, Shepherd, Belchin, Chandler, Howlett, Holmes, Kutz, Woodhead, Fitzgerald, Gundy, Lawler. Players are asked to communicate with the secretary immediately if unable to make the journey.
