FRONTIERSMEN CONFER.
ANNUAL MEETING OF TROOPS. The annual conference of the Taranaki divisions of the Legion of Frontiersmen was held at Hew Plymouth on Sunday evening, the Squadron. Commander, Lieut.- ! Colonel C. 12. Weston, presiding over | good attendance. In the course of his address, the squadron commander mentioned that Frontiersman Rumbal, of the Ati Awa (Urenui) troop, had won the Thompson Shooting Cup outright, and congratulations vere extended to him on. his success. As regarded headquarters staff, they had carried out their duties in a most satisfactory manner. He desired to specially thank Lieuts. Hunter and Bertrand and Frontiersmen Brokenshire and Evans for their great assistance. He regretted' that they had lost the services of Lieut. Goldsworthy, but the speaker as well as all others comrades still cherished the hope that jre long he would return to Taranaki. During the year the legion had lost through death Comrade Worsup, to whose widow and family deep regret had been expressed. The Gisborne conference had been attendi ed by Lieut. Laing, who had reported exhaustively upon the business transacted. Unfqrtunately, headquarters’ records had been lost through a fire which occurred at Lieut. Bertrand’s home. However, the staff were working hard to get as complete a copy as possible. Three annual dinners had been held during the year, Paritutu, Waitara, and Ati Awa, each proving better I than the one held previously. He would like to congratulate the Ati Awa troop jn ' their turn-out on the occasion of Colonel 1 Meldrum’s inspection of the Boy Scouts i at Urenui. i Referring to the future, the speaker said he would like’to see more legionaries don the uniform. More particularly was it desirable on the occasion of praades or camp gatherings. Regarding the usefulness of the organisation, all troops should endeavor to form rifle clubs. Where it was found difficult to obtain the use of a rifle range a good substitute could be found by instituting a Morris tube. In conclusion, he congratulated the various troops upon the satisfactory reports placed before the conference. The following remits were then dealt' with : “That each unit send in a list of active members with their several qualifications to squadron headquarters, with tjto. view of squadron headquarters advising units as to forming a scheme of working, apart from drill and shooting, which arc, of course, a necessary part of the procedure. 1 ’ —Left to each individual troop to specialise in any direction desired. From North Taranaki troop:—(a) “That town members, outside of business members, not attending at least one meeting in three months, and failing an apology, j be struck off the strength.”—Left to each! troon to deal with as they thought best. I (b) “That the squadron annuaj conference 1 be held during annual camp.”—Carried. “That Dominion headquarters issue an agenda paper at least two months befo-e the Dominion conference to each squadron or troop, to enable them to prepare remits, etc.”—Carried. Lieuts. Fraser-Jones and Laing were ap- | pointed to attend the Dominion conference, to be held at Auckland next week. . Lieut.-Colonel Weston was re-elected squadron commander unopposed. Hearty cheers and musical honors accompanied the appointment.
