BUTTER AND CHEESE.

FIRMNESS OF HOME MARKET,EXTENSWE FORWARD SALES, The firmness of butter and cheese in. the London market has led to active buying locally, and the fluctuations of the market are illustrated by what has taken place during the past few weeks (says yesterday’s Dominion). About a month ago wholesale buyers were offering factories Is 4:]d to Is 5d per pound, and a fair amount of business was done. Later, there was an advance in London, and the prices here ascended in keeping with the movements of the London market. Buyers offered Is 54d, then Is Gd, and now the price ranges from 16 Gid to Is 7d, and it is rumored that a factory in the Auckland district sold at as high as Is 7%d. Contracts have been made for delivery in June, July, and August, and it seems that there will be no cessation of butter-making' during the winter. Every cow that can supply milk just now is being worked, and some wool men have been milking the station cows in order to get in some ready money. The demand for butter has been so good that there is just t» possibility that there may be a shortage for local consumption. The position with regard to cheese is not quite so good as that of butter. The price has risen considerably, and many crates have changed hands, but there is still a surplus awaiting buyers. The season has been a phenomenal one in all respects, and in normal times there would be very little butter being made now, and the factories would be closing down. The weather has been fine, and there is plenty of feed, and as the farmers are nn need of ready cash they have not •hesitated to continue working. The outlook for next season is very good, and ■the output from New Zealand ought to show a substantial increase, for more and more farmers will turn to dairying for a living.
