An officer of high standing, who was on the steamer Egypt at. the time of The disaster, states that it is generally known that smuggling of revolvers by Lascars is taking place. A large number of Lasears bad one a-piece, not for protection, but because they fetch high prices in India. NORTHGLIFFE AND THE TIMES. London, June 19. Lord Northcliffe has bought the Walter interest in The Times for £225,000, thus severing the historical connection of the Walter family with the paper. PRINTING WAGES REDUCED. London, June 19. The whole of the provincial newspapers and printing houses in the provinces and London have served the unions with notice of the intention to reduce wages by IGs weekly , in order to bring the scale into conformity with the reduced cost of living. If the unions resist, the proprietors have decided to close the offices. INDIAN OFFICERS DEMOBILISED. Delhi, June 19. Army headquarters states that 1600 officers are being demobilised from the Indian Army, starting in July by 100 weekly. No definite information is given regarding settlement in certain Dominions, but several have expressed their intention of settling in Australia. MR. SASTRI’S MISSION. Calcutta, June 19. An extremist paper is bitterly hostile to Mr. Sastri’s mission to Australasia and says it- is quite unnecessary and the money would be better spent where urgently needed in India.
