DISTRICT NEWS.

OAKURA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Now that winter is with us the Oakuraites have been putting their heads together to devise ways and means of passing the long evenings. Card parties and dances appear to take leading place, and in addition to the usual fortnightly euchre parties private challenge matches have been arranged between picked players. The first of these took place on Monday, 12th inst., when two teams of six-a-side divided themselves into pairs to hold a friendly contest in euchre crib, and five hundred. One side consisted of residents from the Surrey Hill Road and the other of those living along the Main South Road. It was agreed that play should continue for two hours and at the conclusion it was found that the result was a draw. Surrey Hill showed to advantage in euchre, winning by six games to two, while Oakura scored six games against three for their rivals in crib. In five hundred the total was almost equal in both cases. Two more matches will take place on dates not yet arranged. Last week a number of Oakuraites visited Tataraimaka and were lucky enough to take home both the ladies’ and gents’ prizes. Mrs. H. E. Marsh not only won bn that occasion, but also secured the ladies’ prize at the Oakura district hall on Thursday last. In the gents’ division, Mr. G. H. Bell scored the highest total. We were very pleased to welcome a number of friends from Tataraimaka, who paid a return visit on Thursday night. The beautiful weather prevailing at present was no doubt accountable for the large attendance. As already stated, Mrs. Marsh won the victory for the ladies and Mr. J. West carried off the gents’ prize after a replay. with Mr. J. Honeyfield, who also scored eleven, games. The company on Thursday evening included Mr. Adlam, who has been a resident of the district for many years and for some time chairman of the hall committee.

A number of eager card players are endeavoring- to bring about, a. competition between Tataraimaka and Oakura in the near future.

It is with regret we learn of the impending departure of Mr. and Mrs. George Sherwoodf who have taken an active part in the affairs of the district since their arrival. Mr. Sherwood gave valuable assistance in the building of the wing which was recently added to the hall.

The news of the death of Mr. Alex Stewart, Okato, came as a great shock to the people of Oakura. For a number of years he was a weekly visitor, and everybody who knew him agrees that he was a friend worth knowing. The sympathy of the district is extended to Mrs. Stewart and family.
