A SERIOUS DISEASE
AMERICAN DISCOVERS CURE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 19, 7.15 p.m. Washington, June 19. The Agricultural Department announces that Dr. Half, of the department, has discovered that carbon tetrachlorine, which is a cheap, common chemical, is an effective cure in practically 100 per ent. of cases of hookworm. Thousands of cases have been treated in Ceylon and Fiji with doses of less than ten cubic centimetres, and a single treatment removed the parasite in 98 per cent, of the cases treated. The department, in its statement, says the success gives reason to believe that the method is far superior to thymol and chenopodium treatments, since the latter instances produced fatalities, while carbon tetrachlorine is harmless. —Aus.-N.Z.
