CORRESPONDENCE.
REAL CO-OPERATION. (To the Editor.) Sir—Seeing that the dairy pool has been I upset, in the meantime it has occurred to me that all factories in Taranaki should form a real co-operation association amongst themselves, so that the experience of the last season be not repeated, namely, that some of the banks who arc financing the factories, and who are well secured, would only allow the directors of some of the factories to pay out as low as 6d and 8d per lb on the butter-fat, thus preventing suppliers from meeting their engagements in the way of interest, payments for the cows supplied to them by the auctioneers rates, and other living expenses. It is pretty hard on the auctioneers who assist farmers with daily cows, which supply th? factory with butter-fat, and then financial institutions in turn liquidate their overdraft instead of the farmers getting a fair thing, so that they could carry on in a reasonable manner, as I believe most farmers are honest, and have the very best intentions, but cannot do impossibilities without reasonable assistance from those who command the finance. By co-opera-tion and combining of all the factories a much better arrangement could be made, and if necessary concentrate their business into one bank, who would give them more liberal treatment, and be less frightened than some of these institutions appear to be financing individual factories during the last year. An arrangement like this would do more good than some suppliers arguing about pools. To these suppliers I will recommend a careful study of real co-opera-tion because they are actually concerned for supplies of fat to a co-operation factory at present and must therefore believe in co-operation; consequently I suggest tbit they carry the matter still further and by concentration get much better terms, and more gradual depreciation written off with factories so as to give the suppliers a chance in times like the present. I trust, Mr. Editor, that some of your correspondents who are well versed will take this
J matter up and bring about a better state of things amongst our dairy class of fannj ers, who deserve all help and assistance , that we can give them in times like the I present. Thanking you in anticipation.— i I am, etc., “SPECTATOR.”
