THE COTTON INDUSTRY.
NEED FOR MORE GROWING. PROSPECTS IN QUEENSLAND. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 16, 7.45 p.m. Stockholm, June 16. Mr. Holroyd, of Manchester, addressing an international cotton conference, expressed the opinion that in view of the precarious position of the world’s cotton production all cotton using countries must make every effort to foster an extension of cotton growing. He suggested propaganda in South America and China and the convening of an international conference representing the cotton growing countries with a view to combating cotton pests. Mr. Thomas, of the British cottongrowing Association, said there was a prospect of a wide extension of cotton growing in Queensland, where there were at least fifty million acres capable of growing cotton suitable for Lancashire’s needs, but there was some doubt whether an industry needing abundant and cheap labour could be maintained in Australia.—Aus.-N.Z.
