THE FIRE-BLIGHT.
POSITION FAIRLY HOPEFUL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, June 10. Addressing the Fruit-growers’ Conference. Dr. Tillyard, of the Cawthron Institute, stated the position ot hreblight was fairly hopeful, and it was definitely established that it could be controlled where the hawthorn was era dicated. Except by a miracle, the, disease could never be eradicated .rom New Zealand, and it was only a matter of a year or two before it spread to the South Island. Last spring was most favorable to the disease, which could be expected to show up morn vigorously and virulently when the spring happens to be favorable. Beus and migratory birds spread the fireblight, and the Government shoulu introduce stringent regulations to overcome the danger. Owing to the fear of Australian competition, the fruit-growers decided to urge a substantial increase in the duty on Austi*alian cherries and grapes.
