PENALTY FOR CRIME.

SENTENCE IN KOPAKT CASE. TWELVE MONTHS’ HARD LABOR. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, June 16. At the Hamilton Supreme Court the following sentences were imposed: — Frank James Mlntosh for theft, two years’ probation; Francis Corcoran for forgery and uttering, two years’ reformative treatment: Charles Alexander Campbell for arson at l.’e Kuiti, two years’ reformative treatment. Herbert Holgate, Alfred Glover, Leonard Grundy and Richard Daly were found guilty of grievous bodily harm at Kopaki. M. Justice Herdman said the assault on Routledge was brutal in the extreme, but he would take into consideration that the prisoners were not of the criminal class and that their characters were previously good. The crime was committed when heated with drink, but drunkenness was no excuse and when they were fools enough to drink to excess and play the part of cowardly bullies they must pay for their unlawful behaviour. His Honor paid a lowing tribute to the rangers and said they must be protected and he would take into consideration that the jury found the prisoners not guilty of the more serious offence of attempted mur ‘ der. He sentenced the prisoners to 12 months’ hard labour.
