A London cable records the marriage of Colonel Freyberg, V.C., the distinguished ex-New Zealander, to the Hon. Mrs. McLaren, widow of the late Mr. Francis McLaren, who was a member of the House of Commons. Sir James Barrie was best man.
An Auckland message states that Mr. Charles Herbert Gould, J.P., aged 59, manager of the Napier branch of the National Bank, has died after a serious illness of some months’ duration. Mr. W. G. Reid, secretary to the Taranaki School Committees’ Association, tendered his resignation to yesterday’s annual meeting of the association. On the motion of Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., the resignation was accepted and the conference placed on record its appreciation of the work done' by Mr. Reid during his seven years’ service. The resignation of Mrs. E. A. Walker from the position of vice-president of the New Plymouth sub-centre of the British Red Cross Society was accepted with regret at the adjourned annual meeting of the society, members making eulogistic reference to the valuable work she had done during the war years and since, and a vote of thanks and appreciation was passed.
