CIVIL ENGINEERS.

CONFERENCE AT NEW PLYMOUTH. VISIT TO PUBLIC WORKS. The half-yearly meeting of the members of the Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers was held in the Tananaki County Council Chambers, New Plymouth, on Tuesday. There was a good attendance of members from all parts of the district. Mr. T. M,. Ball, resident engineer, Public Works Department, presided. The Mayor (Mr. F. Wilson) welcomed the engineers on behalf of the borough of New Plymouth, and said that he hoped that the meeting would be a successful one and that every member would receive benefit thereby. The chairman (Mr. Ball) thanked the Mayor for his kindly remarks. Routine business was proceeded with and correspondence showed the branches in other parts of the Dominion were active, there being a mutual exchange of papers read at the various meetings. The chairman took occasion to welcome Mr. R. H. Bartley and Mr. R. L. Fearless as new members of the society. After the business was concluded, the members visited Moturoa, where the new works being prosecuted by the Harbour Board were inspected. Mr. G. A. Lee piloted the visitors over the various works and described points of interest. The incline and overhead tramways and Paritatu quarry were visited, also the tiphead, where the Thomas King was seen dumping material for the extension of the breakwater. After luncheon the engineers motored to the power station of the municipal electrical supply on Junction Road. Here the new machinery and alterations were inspected. Messrs. Lee (one of the consulting engineers) and Fearless (resi- > dent engineer) conducted the visitors over the works of the new hydro-electric scheme and plans of the works were exhibited and described by Mr. Lee. The pipe lines, tunnels and dam sites were visited, and just before the close of the meeting, at the site of one of the intakes, Mr. Pearless read a very interesting paper, which he had prepared on the hydro-electric scheme, detailing the methods of construction, progress of the work, and costs pertaining to the various works being carried out. The chairman thanked Mr. Pearless on behalf of the meeting for the presentation of such an interesting and valuable paper. The engineers were accompanied by the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) and several members of local bodies of Taranaki. Before dispersing Mr. Pitt, of Stratford, thanked Mr. Lee and the members of the Society of Civil Engineers, on behalf of the local bodies’ visitors, for the opportunity of going over the works and for the interesting information gained during the visit. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Taranaki County Council for the use of the council chamber for the meeting, and the Press for past favours.
