Moore) reported: as follows:. — New Work.—We have very little new work div at present. The fittings and furniture at the Stratford Technical High School science laboratories are completed and now ready for the classes. The iiew movable school for Hapurua was sent .up and is now being erected, . Repair . Work.—Stratford primary school: General repairs have received attention; 1 General and painting repairs are receiving attention and will be completed this week. Mimi: The extension of the shelter shed and other work authorised was completed. Urenui: The removal of the boy’s shed, general repairs to school and front fence of residence was also completed. The committee will see to the carrying out of repairs to the boundaiy fences as agreed. Otangiwai: I have had the matter of general painting repairs to both the school and residence referred to me for some time and during the recent visit the work was let to a local painter. Both the school and residence are urgently in need of attention. General.—Ngaere old residence.: I had this place taken down and the material' is being sold in lots to suit purchasers.

Whareroa. —Lining of hall: I met the members of the committee and went into the question of lining the hall. The cost of lining up to 6 feet high would be for material alone about £l7. I asked if the committee would be agreeable to find the labor and the matter was to be brought before the hall committee. Unless the Department will make a grant I am unable to recommend, this expenditure out of the board’s maintenance grant. I have the matter of a stove in. hand and.,ijppe to .get it fixed this week. The committee agreed to allow., .the,..stove to go in on condition it could be made movable. Workshop: The staff are still busy turning out general furniture. A considerable quantity has been completed during the past month. Dudley Road: The chairman of the committee interviewed me in connection with a scheme of laying on the water from the Inglewood Borough

supply-, the pipes -to pass-close; to the school. , This is a good proposition and will save the cost of upkeep of tank and stand arid , will be a great improvement generally. The committee have also under consideration the matter of a small septic tank and flushbig system. The committee will find all the labor and part cost of material if the board will pay £-10 towards the cost of laying on the water to the school. I would recommend this for favorable consideration. West End shelter: I have given this matter careful consideration and would suggest that the best and most economical way to give the children protection from the weather will be to erect a plain open front sheltei* along the western side of the playground about 75 feet long S feet wide. The cost will not exceed £BO. Members pointed out that it was the practice of the board to subsidise shelter sheds on the basis of £2 to £l, but it was thought that,in the case of such a large amount the committee should find more. Mr. Smith held that the West End Committee was entitled to special consideration, inasmuch as they had provided a shelter shed in the shape of the gymnasium, which had been taken by the department for classrooms. He moved that, in view o£ this, .the department be asked to contribute £4O towards the cost and the committee contribute £2O. Mr. Deare seconded the motion,. which was carried. It was resolved to apply to the department for a grant s of £l7 for fining the Whareroa Hall, and also for a grant for out-offices. Dudley Road Committee was granted £lO for laying on water. ATTENDANCE OFFICER’S REPORT. The attendance officer (Mr. S. Pascoe) reported that during the month he had sent out 44 iregular attendance notices to parents of children attending primary schools. He had visited the following eighteen schools:— Countenay Street, Hurford, Purangi, Riverlea, Rowan, Tarata, Te Kiri, Tiko-f-angi, Waiau, Waitui, and New Plymouth Convents. With the exception of Te Kiri (where the attendance was poor) the attendance had been very good. . Except for a little sickness and stress of weather, monthly returns from schools showed very little irregularity. There were two or three cases of Maoris taking their children to Ratana’s camp for a period of one or two weeks and attending no school. Should any action apart from a warning be taken in these cases ? He had also assisted in new and repair work. . It was resolved to draw the attention of the Te Kiri Committee to the attendance officer’s report and to ask for an explanation. VISIT TO OHURA. Mr. H. Trimble, accompanied by Mr. C. H. Moore, the board’s architect, visited Ohura from June G to 10, and submitted a report on various matters at Okahukura, Matiere, Turoto, Waitewheria, Hapurua, Ohura, and Otangiwai. They concluded by stating that the bad state of the roads prevented them from getting about as much as they would have liked, a visit to that part of the country being essentially »l summer work. They thanked the officials of the Public Works Department for their courtesy and help, and Messrs. Hansen and Pickering for driving them to Waitewhena*and Hapurua. The report was received and various re commendations adopted, Mr. Trimble being thanked for the report. It was also resolved to ask the Auckland Board if it would take over the building at Okahukura. APPLICATIONS FOR SUBSIDY. The Advisory Board of the Stratford Technical High School made application for a subsidy of £BO7 5s Id, being £ for £ on the money raised for the improvement of the school grounds, plans of which were submitted, the work being estimated to cost £1859. They also asked the board to confirm their action in letting the work by day instead of by contract. The board approved of the application and decided to forward it to the department. The architect was empowered to consult with the teachers and committee in con- ! nection with the proposed extension of the gymnasium at Fitzroy, to relieve the overcrowding, and to prepare an amended plan The Fitzroy Committee raised £275 towards this. GENERAL. The question of , the extension of the Lepperton school site was left in the hands of Messrs. Smith and Deare. The application of the Normanby Committee for increased accommodation and teachers’ room was referred to the senior inspector for a report. In regard lo the .application of the Tawhili School Committee for a moveable schoolroom, it was resolved to ask the .department for a reply to the letter of April It was resolved to apply to the department for £23 19s, for fencing the Waikaka site. The Mangatoki School Committee applied for- a grant for installing a new- ram, etc., in connection with the water supply. —lt. was resolved to draw attention to the board’s resolution regarding unauthorised expenditure, arid asking for an explanation as to why the debt was incurred without authority. The Senior Inspector submitted a report on the Oeo School, and recommended that the department be asked for a grant to enable the room to be extended bv about 10 feet, and then a partition could be erected to provide two classrooms.—Application to be made as suggested.
