YOUTHFUL THIEVES.
FIVE YOUNG MEN CHARGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last NightFive young men, whose exploits of breaking and entering in the Ponsonby district during May revealed remarkable depravity, appeared before Mr. Justice Stringer at the Supreme Court to-day. He commented that Henry John Esdale appeared to be on a different footing from his four partners in crime, as he had previously undergone reformative treatment. The Judge sentenced Esdale to a month’s imprisonment, followed by not more than two years’ reformative detention. With regard to the other four. His Honor commented that the exploits were more in the nature of youthful escapades than crime. He could accept the probation officer’s recommendation and place Colin J. Grant, Douglas Sowden. James W. Simpson, and Swinburne Hadley each upon probation for three years, while he ordered them to pay costs.
