I THE RUGBY GAME. | ; THE MAORIS v. WELLINGTON, KEEN MATCH DRAWN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The New Zealand Maori team drew with Wellington to-day in beautiful weather, the score being six all. There was an attendance of 6000. The Maoris won the toss and played with the sun at their back. Play was fast and open. Wellington had the advantage in the first spell, attacking consistently. The backs were aggressive, but the Maori defence was too good. There was no score till the spell was well advanced, when Jackson unade a nice run. He was tackled, but Troy, following up fast, scored. In the second spell Jacobs (Maoris) scored a try. Later the ball was dribbled on the line and Trezise scored, making the score: ’ Maoris 6, Wellington 3. Wellington made great efforts to score. They were unsuccessful until McClay secured and transferred to Siddells, to Jackson, who kicked. Troy, again following up fast, secured and bustled over the line. The place kicking was poor. The Maoris showed much improved form, and made play fast, open and interesting. The final score was: Maoris 6, Wellington. 6. UNIVERSITY MATCH. Christchurch, Last Night. After a fast and spectacular game, Otago University beat Canterbury College by 17 to 6. The Otago backs showed decided superior- ‘ ity, but in the forwards Canterbury more than held their own. For Canterbury Calder scored a try and Cooper kicked a penalty goal. For Otago tries were secured by Bray, Robertson, Porritt, Stewart and Hull, and one was converted. PLAY AT INGLEWtOOD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The senior team of the Inglewood school played a match against a team from the Stratford school on Saturday. The game was well contested throughout. The visiting team was distinctly heavier than Inglewood’s young representatives, and in the first spell, when the only score, a goal from a penalty kick, was made, had the advantage of the strong south wind that was blowing in their favour. Though the home team failed to score in the second spell with the wind behind them, they deserve credit for the good game they played. The Inglewood school captain, Cliff Corkill. allowed promise of filling that position very creditably. After the game the teams were entertained at luncheon, provided by the pupils of the Inglewood school, and finally separated with expressions of hearty goodwill on both sides and hopes for a fine day for the return game. Ideal conditions prevailed to-day for the Association football match between Australia and Otago, which was played at the Carlsbrook ground in the presence of 3000 spectators. A few of best players were resting in view of the first test match in Dunedin on Saturday. The match was very fast, evenly contested and full of interest. Australia showed superiority in concerted work, but the goal scoring opportunities were equally shared by the opposing team. In the first spell the defence by both sides was too good, neither side scoring. Australia had two penalty kicks, both of which were well saved by Manteil, in goal for Otago. In the second spell Fisher scored from a penalty kick, and Dane from a capital long drive for Australia, and Robinson scored for Otago from a penalty kick. Dickel, of Otago, was responsible for giving Australia three penalty kicks. The final score was: Australia 2 goals, Otago 1. > Mr. W. P. Smith refereed.
