RAILWAY OFFICERS.
ACTION] BY CONFERENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At the annual conference of the New) Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute to« day, it was decided to draw the attention of the Government to the low rate of interest earned by the railways su- ' perannuation fund, and to urge that the funds be invested to better tage. It was agreed that for excess time worked payment should be made instead of time off, as at present, and that special rates of pay for night work be pressed for. The question of houses and housd rents was discussed at length, and it was resolved that the whole question of rentals be brought before the department, and that rentals 'be reduced in accordance with the cut that has been made in salaries since January 1 last, on the principle of a day’s pay for a week’s rent. •Other decisions were arrived at with regard to the erection of houses where required, and supplying electric light to departmental tenants where euch light is available. A North Canterbury remit that members of the institute should be debarred from acting as appeal board advocates for non-members and unfinancial menu berG of the institute, met with little favor, and was almost unanimously rejected.
