VIOLENT STORM

HOUSES OVERTURNED. MANY PERSONS KILLED. HONEYMOON TRAGEDY, By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 12, 7.40 p.m. New York, June 12. A rainstorm of unprecedented violence overturned houses and uprooted thousands of trees in the various parks and suburbs, doing thousands of dollars’ worth of damage, and resulted in the death of eight persons and injury to more than a hundred, many seriously. Six were killed by falling trees and seven were drowned on bathing beaches. Five were killed and 26 injured when the wind overturned a ferris wheel in a suburban amusement park. Several young honeymooners went, to the Washburn aerial field (Chicago) for the purpose of making pleasure flights, but the pilots consistently refused, because the high winds made a flight dangerous. One couple persisted and induced the pilot to take them up. The ’plane fell and the couple were killed, while the pilot was dangerously injured. Later reports show that 38 persons were drowned, apart from other deaths, all in Long Island Sound, near the metropolitan district. Rowboats, launches and sailboats cruising near Execution Light were caught in the squaU, many of them upsetting. During the past week New York has suffered a great heat spell, and a million persons crowded the beaches and Sound to escape the heat during the holidays.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
