LOANS TO SOLDIERS.
REPATRIATION ADVANCES. THE PERIOD EXTENDED By Teleyr a ph.—Press Association. Wellington, Tune 9. Cabinet has decided to extend until the end of the present year the period during which the Repatriation Department will make advances to returned soldiers. The period originally fixed was to expire on June 30 next. This extension makes it possible for soldiers to continue to secure business loans, furniture grants, and the. other benefits extended to them by the department. The Hon. J. H. Guthrie said an extensive extension was justified by the very fine results achieved and by the very good work of the departmental officers and local committees. The total amount of the advances made by the Repatriation Department had been roughly £1,800,000, and most of this was money lent in small sums and the security very often had been slight, yet the repayments had amounted already to 55 per cent, of the total advances, the sum still outstanding bemgin the neighborhood of £BOO,OOO. The department had over £17,000 in outa standing accounts, but the vast major- ■ ity of the men were fulfilling their obligations.
