The Attorney-General, referring to the growing grip of the betting craze, said that if all applications for art unions during the past twelve months had been granted there would have been one for nearly every day of the year. A growing disposition to regard work as an evil led to an extraordinary craze to get something for nothing. This spirit was doing enormous harm throughout the Commonwealth. During six months of 1921 two million people paid for admission to Sydney’s race meetings.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
