WAITARA.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) June 8. The monthly meeting of t the Chamber of Commerce was hold, on Tuesday evening. Mr. H. E. Vaughan presiding. The Stratford Chamber of Commerce asked for support to a reversion to the railway time-table whereby the afternoon train would leave Stratford at 3 p.m. instead of 1.35, as at present. —lt was resolved that the alteration was not acceptable, as the earlier hour was fixed to suit Hawera people, and it also suited stock traffic to the Waitara and Smart Road works. The member for the district (Mr. W. T. Jennings) is to be asked to support the Government in any steps they may take in preventing affiliation of the Post and Telegraph Department with the Alliance of Labor. Captain Bremner, of the headquarters staff, waited on the chamber in reference to the proposed alteration of drill for cadets. A seven days’ camp is proposed to be substituted for the weekly drill, the object being to secure greater efficiency at less expense.—lt was resolved that the chamber was in favour of an annual camp in addition to weekly or fortnightly parades. The “cut” in the carriage of mail matter between here and Urenui was brought forward by Mr. W. R. Johns, and he moved that the department be written to asking that arrangements be made with Mr. A. J. Smith to carry a daily mail to and from Urenui. A recommendation from the executive that a committee be set up to consider the best means of conserving the business of the town was submitted.— It was resolved that Messrs. Vaughan, Kibby and Wells be a deputation to wait on the business people asking them to attend a special meeting of the chamber to discuss the matter. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the school committee was held on Monday evening, Mr. T. R. Ford presiding. The headmaster’s report showed the roll number had reached to 383. Last week’s average attendance was 347, ana the previous week’s 349, the highest on record. With the increased attendance there is a chance of securing an additional assistant in July. The Waitara pupils came first and second in the agricultural competition group and third for North Taranaki. It was resolved that the successful pupils be complimented on the success they had obtained.

It was resolved that the board bn approached, suggesting that St. John’s Hall be procured for technical instruction, and that the whole of the technical building on the school site be used for primary education.
