A JURY’S BEQUEST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, June 8. After the jury had been out some time in the arson case, they returned. The foreman stated that, owing to the complex nature of the case, the jury desired a copy of the judge’s official notes of the evidence. Mr. Justice Chapman: That is never done by any Judge. The foreman pointed out that the case had lasted two days and the jury could not trust to their memory. The Judge refused the request, but read aloud the evidence of a number of witnesses. Bertram Alexander High was founa not guilty. The jury added a rider that, in the .interests of justice in cases of a complex nature the jury should be furnished with a complete copy of the notes of the evidence. ANTI-RETRENCHMENT RESOLUTION. Taihape, June 8. A large meeting of combined Civil Servants, held oh Wednesday evening, passed the following resolution: “Seeing that the salaries of Civil Servants have already been reduced by six shillings per week from January 1, and that as the Arbitration Court, after full inquiry into the cost of living, decided that a reduction of only five shillings per week from May was justified, this meeting of Civil Servants strongly protests against any further reduction until the Arbitration Court decided that the cost of living justifies a further reduction, and pledges itself to support the executive in any action they considered justified to combat any further decrease.
