RAILWAYMEN’S WAGES.
FURTHER REDUCTION OPPOSED. NEXT "CUT” TO BE FOUGHT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At the railway officers’ conference, Mr. J. Forde (Wellington) introduced the following remit: “That the conference should consider the proposed further ‘cuts’ in salaries by the Government and bringdown recommendations to branches so that the', mofet effective combined action that is possible may be resorted to in order that the preesnt standard of life allowed railway officers may not only be maintained, but that it may be considerably advanced.” After a lengthy discussion the remit was referred to a committee, with instructions to bring down concrete proposals for the further consideration of the conference. Mr. M. E. Carroll (Auckland) moved that a permanent conciliation council be formed on the same lines as the council formed after the 1920 strike, and that it be empowered to adjudicate on matters similar to those dealt with by the afterstrike tribunal. Mr. H. B. Taylor (South Auckland) seconded the remit, which was discussed at considerable length, and was still before the conference when it adjourned.
