ARE JAPANESE WHITES?

INTERESTING LEGAL ARGUMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 7, 5.5 p.m. London, June fl. The question whether the Japanese are a white race will be argued before the United States Supreme Court. The Times states that Mr. Beck (American Solicitor-General), who is now in London, says the Japanese in Hawaii applied for naturalisation on the ground that the Japanese were a white race and therefore not barred by the colour clause. They traced the history of Japan for thousands of years to the Ainu tribe. The Lower Court rejected the theory and the claimant lodged an appeal. Mr. Beck understands the Ainu tribe bears distinct Caucasian traits.— AuA-N.Z. Cable Assn.
