DAIRY ASSOCIATION.
SOUTH ISLAND MEETING. INDUSTRY RECOVERING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, June 7. At the annual meeting of the South Island Dairy Association, the chairman, in his address, said it was very satisfactory to note that the industry was getting back to pre-war conditions. The year had been very strenuous owing to fluctuating prices with a downward tendency. Farmers had to meet many financial difficulties, and some had been forced to leave their farms, and others held on with difficulty. It was urgently necessary for farmers to increase their output to the utmost, thus not only benefiting themselves but the Dominion as a whole. About 23,000 crates of cheese and 49,000 boxes of butter would be exported this season. A motion that the association consider altering the present system of grading cheese was defeated, Mr. Singleton, Director of the Dairy Division of the Agricultural Department, pointing out that, if the proposal was carried, the probability would be that producers as a whole would receive less for their produce. A resolution was passed that the association should use its influence to get the Government to appoint more dairy inspectors in the South Island.
A resolution was carried that a committee representing cheese and butter factories be set up for the purpose of placing before the Minister and General Manager of Railways any points in connection with the regulations governing the carriage of dairy produce which prevented the best possible service being rendered by the department in carrying these goods, and suggested that the North Island associations should appoint a similar committee to unite with the South Island in approaching the Railway Department.
