CHRISTCHURCH UNEMPLOYED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, June 6. The urgent need of relief works was placed before the Premier by a deputation representing public bodies and the unemployment committee. The deputation stated the nature of the work proposed and sought financial aid from the Government. The Premier stated he had money set aside for unemployment relief works ; and would aid schemes which met the i Government’s approval. He was anxious the work should be put in hand as soon as possible. ANTI-PLAGUE REGULATIONS. Wellington, June 6. The Minister of Public Health states ’ emphatically that the- regulations regarding ships from plague-infested countries are not to be relaxed. Greymouth, June 6. W. Balderstone, secretary of the Blackball Miners’ Union, was recently convicted and fined £25 for inciting a strike. The decision was appealed against in the Appeal Court, which declared Balderstone a “worker” within the meaning of the Act, which provides a maximum penalty of £lO. The case was remitted to Mr. Meldrum, S.M., to impose a lower penalty. To-day the Magistrate reduced the fine to £2. DISPUTE OVER WOOL. Gisborne, June 6The dispute between shipowners and wharf labourers regarding the handling of the Government greasy wool which has been under discussion for several days is still unsettled and the steamer Tasmania, which has been waiting for cargo, has been ordered to proceed to Napier. CONTROL GF EXPENDITURE. Wellington, June 6. One of the steps in the economy campaign is the concentration of capital expenditure in the hands of the Public Works Department. This is a reversion to the practice of former years and is expected to reduce appreciably the State expenses. Several departments have had the spending of money on various works, and there has been 'an overlapping. All departments requiring capital "expenditure will have to make their recommendation to the Minister of Public Works, and his sanction will be required before the money i can be spent.
