TEACHING TEMPERANCE.

PAMPHLET IN SCHOOLS. REPLY TO MODERATE LEAGUE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, June 6. The Minister of Education replied today by letter to the criticism of pamphlet 13. advanced by the New Zealand Moderate League. Mr. C. J. Parr says he fails to see why the league should object to the economic aspect of the subject being introduced, as it very properly belongs to any general review of the subject. Throughout the league’s criticism there was a good deal of straw-splitting and frequently its criticism was based on a serious misreading of the plain meaning of the pamphlet. Mr. Parr adds: “I consider that the opponents of the pamphlet, by misinterpreting its true meaning, have unjustifiably assumed that children are being taught that parents who are moderate drinkers are unworthy of their children’s respect. No fair-minded reader of the pamphlet in its present form could find the slightest justification for the extreme terms you use in this connection.” Finally the Minister says he. sees no reason for withdrawing or materially altering the pamphlet..
