PORT OF NEW PLYMOUTH.

THE RETURNS FOR MAY. For the period ending on May 27 twenty-three vessels entered the port of New Plymouth, their tonnage being 40,775 tons. The imports amounted to 8419 tons and the exports to 2507 tons, a total of 10,926 tons. For the corresponding period of last year the number of vessels entering the port was 20, their tonnage being 38/>l7 tons. The imports amounted to 11,686 tons and the exports to 2239 tons, a total of 13,925 tons. Included in the returns for the 1921 period was the Austral Crag, which landed 3500 tons of slag direct from Home, and the Maindy Lodge 3000 tons of coal for railway purposes. These two shipments accounted, therefore, for more than half the total imports for that period, so that the ordinary merchandise business is being more than maintained.
