RAILWAY LOSSES.

SOME TRAINS HALF EMPTY, MOTOR LORRIES SUGGESTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. Replying to a deputation urging the continuance of the Tapanui-Catlins line, the Prime Minister said the Government could not go in for railway building unless it was sure that the traffic was available, otherwise it would be better to give settlers good roads. He believed, by the way things were going, that instead of running trains half empty, the , Government would close down* some of the services and employ motor lorries to do the work. The Government was concentrating on unfinished works now, such as the Otira Tunnel. The line in question was really an extension, but he thought it was quite probable it would be proceeded with.
