WAITARA
(From Our Own Correspondent.) June 2. The committee who have in hand the establishment of a memorial to the men who paid the supreme sacrifice from Waitara have let a contract to Mr. Short, of New Plymouth, for the erection of a cross of sacrifice in a plain and simple design, similar to those used in France. The memorial will stand in Broadway, and will be easily seen by passers by. At the present time the contractors have the filling and levelling of the road in hand, and it is hoped that this will be finished in time to enable the planting of an avenue of English oak trees this season. The altered time-table to a tri-weekly service in the carriage of mails north of Waitara took effect on June 1, and will continue until December 1 next. It was generally understood that the alteration would only take effect after passing Uruti, but it appears that Motonui, Onaero, and even Urenui will be affected. The local freezing works ceased killing operations for the season on Wednesday last. It is reported that extensive alterations to the works are to be carried out this winter, which will mean employment for a number of men. The Rev. G. W. Dent, who was vicar of Waitara, 15 years ago, is at present revisiting the district. Mr. Dent suffered severe bereavement recently in the sudden death of Mrs. Dent, and is here for a rest and change.
